The Story of Giki So Far

Ten years ago, James and Jo Hand set out to answer a question everyone was asking: what can I actually do about climate change? Today, that question has shaped a mission-led B Corp and social enterprise that combines deep sustainability expertise with purpose-built tools to make climate action faster, practical and accessible.

That mission is built on deep expertise and commitment. James and Jo each bring more than 20 years in sustainability leadership – 40 years combined. James was co-CIO of a FTSE 250 company before co-founding Giki, pairing deep environmental expertise with senior commercial and financial leadership. Jo spent years on the leadership team at CDP, the world's leading environmental disclosure platform, and began her career as an investigative journalist at the BBC, training that still shapes Giki's evidence-based, accessible approach to climate information today.

Over the past decade, that combination of expertise and practicality has produced three genuinely different products for three different audiences – and made each one work.

Giki Badges came first in 2017, helping consumers understand the impact of their weekly shop, using our ratings of 250,000 UK supermarket products and earning coverage from the BBC, The Times and the Daily Mail, and 60,000+ downloads. Giki Zero followed in 2020, taking the same philosophy into the workplace, employee carbon footprinting and engagement now used by organisations from Accenture and Deloitte to Oxford University and NatWest. Used across 100 countries, Giki was also selected to run the Employee Race to Zero, part of the UN Race to Zero, the largest global campaign for net zero.

Most recently, Giki Actions launched in 2025 to tackle a gap consumer and enterprise tools couldn't reach: SMEs. Built on a library of 750+ decarbonisation actions across 190+ sectors, it helps small and medium businesses build a climate action plan in around an hour, with no external help or preparation needed.

Three products. Three audiences. One consistent approach: mission-driven and evidence-based, designed to be practical and easy to understand and implement.

Ten years on, that approach has reached real scale. 800+ companies worldwide, from SMEs to global market leaders, have worked with Giki. More than 150,000 people have taken over a million climate actions through our platforms, and our workshops have reached over 10,000 people in person. We're an SME Climate Hub partner, funded by the UK Government's DESNZ SME Decarbonisation team, a founding member of the Climate Champions Climate Proofing SMEs campaign, and have advised on the BSI Net Zero Transition Plans for SMEs Code of Practice and the Bankers for Net Zero SME data standards working group, and provided evidence to House of Lords Environment Select Committee.

We believe every person and business should be able to take meaningful climate action. Ten years in, with three products proven and a growing coalition of partners, that momentum is growing across the globe.
