Mission, the London-based coffee and matcha brand, celebrated becoming a B Corp this summer, and we're delighted to have helped them with Giki Actions on their climate action planning.
For Mission, looking after the planet and supporting communities have always been core to their values, since launch in 2019. Founder Tom Whittle wanted to find a more natural way to fuel everyone from everyday to elite athletes.
From corporate lawyer to founder
Tom exchanged life as a corporate lawyer to become a mission-driven founder. He was inspired while setting a Guinness world record running across Iceland, followed by a 12,500km charity bike ride across South America. Here he discovered yerba maté, a clean, jitter-free alternative to sugar-and-caffeine heavy energy drinks. This led to the birth of his company, Mission.
Becoming a B Corp was an important validation and recognition of the company's aims and values for everyone at the company, along with their customers, who range from world-class tennis players and Premier League football clubs to Formula 1 teams and over 100 GB Team athletes.
Getting to a climate action plan
Grace Kelly, Operations and Customer Success Manager, took on the baton of B Corp certification at Mission, supported and guided by B Corp guru Andy Hawkins, founder of Business on Purpose, who has helped hundreds of companies through the multiple requirements of B Corp certification.
Where Andy's guidance gave Mission the wider context, he recommended Giki Actions to Grace to take care of the climate action B Corp requirements.
"Building a climate action plan from scratch would have taken me days," said Grace. "Using Giki Actions was a huge time saver, really efficient and gave me confidence that we were creating a really good plan."
Without it, she says she'd likely have leaned on ad hoc advice she could pick up or turned to AI for ideas. "I wasn't aware of a direct replacement or alternative to what Giki Actions provides us."
The platform's recommendations also fed directly into Mission's impact report, particularly the environmental section.
"Giki Actions went beyond my expectations," Grace added. "Detailed yet broken into bite-sized, digestible steps. The actions are so clear and specific that you can create your plan with confidence."
What's in the plan
The resulting plan spans a broad range of actions. Some are cross-sectoral, covering supply chain emissions, employee commuting, and energy usage, while others are specific to Mission's own sector, such as building plant-based options into product ranges and sourcing local materials.
What happens next
After celebrating B Corp certification, Grace is now starting to implement actions, and using the plan to keep the team up to date on their environmental progress. She is already prioritising supply chain, packaging, and mobilising employees, and working across the team to help support Mission's B Corp commitments.
